It is with the Steam version that I couldn’t get the widescreen fix to work. What made me get the Steam version was the fact that the disc - or rather the starforce on the disc - doesn’t work with a 64-bit OS, thus disabling the game entirely.
SILENT HUNTER 3 GWX STEAM MOD
So I had the disc version prior to switching over to Windows 7, and the widescreen mod worked perfectly with my XP installation. I’d like to try GWX but I’ve got a 1680*1050 screen. While we have your attention, what’s the status of the widescreen mod for SH3? Is it workable? I have the DVD version, not the steam version, and I played it obsessively for about 3 weeks and then never again. The only thing you lose is the hard drive space of having both on your computer at the same time.
SILENT HUNTER 3 GWX STEAM INSTALL
One more thing: If you’re going to get into SH4, why not install the JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler? This lets you install both RFB and TMO and effortless switch between the two. If you don’t have any sub sim right now, get SH3. Cruising the Pacific (especially if you depart from Pearl) is an experience with a lot more time in-between enemy contacts. SH3 is also a lot more action-packed - you’ll find a lot more contacts faster in the Atlantic. My preference for SH4 + RFB is mostly for the theme and the superior graphics. I completely and wholeheartedly acknowledge that Silent Hunter 3 with GWX installed is the definitive submarine sim and it doesn’t get any better. I should say also that I think the Pacific submarine war is fascinating, and I prefer playing as the US Navy than the Kriegsmarine. If I just want to invest a few hours over the course of a weekend into sinking some tonnage, I’ll play RFB. I love them both, but TMO can be pretty nerve-fraying. When I do a TMO patrol, I chalk it up as a success if I bring my sub home at all. It’s designed to be basically unfair - to make you think hard about every time you raise that periscope or open a torpedo tube door. TMO on the other hand is a difficulty mod. It also makes some interface changes that greatly improve the game. RFB is a realism mod - when you play with it enabled, you’ll get mostly historical results in terms of enemy convoys, their escorts, your sub’s capabilities, etc. So the SH4 mod scene was divided between two major supermods - Real Fleet Boat (RFB) and Trigger Maru Overhauled (TMO). I also think that a lot of people just prefer the Atlantic war over the Pacific - you can probably thank Das Boot for that. Part of that was that SH4 felt like an incremental improvement over SH3, and GWX was just a perfect experience. Hell, probably all 10 would.īut the SH4 modders never got the sort of steam behind them that SH3 modders did. Ask 9 guys at Subsim what the best SH3 mod is and they’ll tell you GWX. The mod scene for SH4 never coalesced behind one supermod the way SH3 did behind the Grey Wolves (or GWX) mod.
